Asbestos testing and removal in Wheat Ridge
Wheat Ridge follows Colorado's state asbestos rules. Here is what's specific to Wheat Ridge, then the state rules every project has to meet.
What's specific to Wheat Ridge
- Wheat Ridge lists "Demolition and Asbestos Abatement" among the projects that need a city building permit. So an abatement job in Wheat Ridge needs a city permit as well as any state permit the work calls for.
- The city keeps a separate online form for it in its Form Center, titled "Permit Application: Asbestos Abatement."
- Under the city's 2026 adopted budget, a demolition permit is a flat $100 for a site under one acre and $1,000 for one acre or more. The city notes these flat fees exclude use tax and plan check.
The state rules that still apply
- Test first if you'll disturb more than 32 square feet of other surfaces, 50 linear feet of pipe or one 55-gallon drum in a house, and before any demolition.
- Crumbly asbestos above those amounts is removed by a state-certified abatement contractor under a state permit ($180–$420 for a house), after a 10-working-day notice.
- Demolition always needs a state demolition notice ($50 plus $5 for every 1,000 square feet demolished).
