Asbestos removal in Denver

If a test finds asbestos in material you need to disturb, Colorado decides who may remove it, how much notice the state gets, and where the waste goes.

Who must do it

Crumbly ("friable") asbestos above the trigger amounts must be removed by a Colorado-certified General Abatement Contractor, under a state permit the contractor files. Check a company on the state's list of certified abatement contractors.

The state permit

For a typical house the permit is $180 (30 days), $300 (90 days) or $420 (1 year). Larger jobs pay $400 to $1,200. Work starts after a 10-working-day notice to the state.

Typical cost in Denver

Angi's Denver price guide puts removal at about $3,662 on average, with most jobs between $1,822 and $5,643, and indoor material at $6.25 to $25 per square foot. Cost details →

Doing it yourself

Questions

Common questions

Who is allowed to remove asbestos in Colorado?

Crumbly ("friable") asbestos above 32 square feet of other surfaces, 50 linear feet of pipe or one 55-gallon drum in a house must be removed by a state-certified General Abatement Contractor under a state permit. A homeowner working on their own primary residence is exempt under state law.

How long until work can start?

The contractor must give the state 10 working days’ notice before removal starts. Emergencies can ask for a waiver.

Where does the waste go?

Crumbly asbestos waste must be sealed in two labeled 6-mil plastic bags and taken only to a landfill approved to accept it. In the Denver area, the Denver Arapahoe Disposal Site in Aurora lists friable and non-friable asbestos as accepted.
