Asbestos testing and removal in Longmont
Longmont follows Colorado's state asbestos rules. Here is what's specific to Longmont, then the state rules every project has to meet.
What's specific to Longmont
- Longmont's demolition permit form says an asbestos test is required to demolish 32 square feet or more of material, and asks you to attach the report.
- If the test comes back positive, the city wants two more papers before it signs off: the state demolition permit and an air clearance report.
- Every utility has to be disconnected at least 24 hours before the structure comes down. Longmont removes the water meter (book it at least 24 hours ahead and bring a written request from the owner), Longmont Power and Communications disconnects power, and Xcel Energy pulls the gas meter.
- The city fee is $100 per structure, and the form says no drawings are required for a demolition.
The state rules that still apply
- Test first if you'll disturb more than 32 square feet of other surfaces, 50 linear feet of pipe or one 55-gallon drum in a house, and before any demolition.
- Crumbly asbestos above those amounts is removed by a state-certified abatement contractor under a state permit ($180–$420 for a house), after a 10-working-day notice.
- Demolition always needs a state demolition notice ($50 plus $5 for every 1,000 square feet demolished).
