Asbestos testing and removal in Arvada
Arvada follows Colorado's state asbestos rules. Here is what's specific to Arvada, then the state rules every project has to meet.
What's specific to Arvada
- Arvada's building permit page lists removal and demolition among the jobs that need a city permit. Applications, inspections and permit records run through the city's eTRAKiT system, called Arvada Permits.
- Cutting off a water or sewer line is a separate permit. When a demolition takes out a water or sewer service, the application needs a utility plan, and the service has to be abandoned at the main with a repair clamp.
- The city says these wet utility disconnect permits can take 5 to 7 business days, so file the disconnect early enough that it does not hold up the tear-down date.
- Replacing siding or windows on an Arvada house also needs a permit. If the old siding is asbestos-cement, that is the moment to get the state-required test (see our page on asbestos siding and transite).
- City inspections run Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The permit office is at 8101 Ralston Road.
The state rules that still apply
- Test first if you'll disturb more than 32 square feet of other surfaces, 50 linear feet of pipe or one 55-gallon drum in a house, and before any demolition.
- Crumbly asbestos above those amounts is removed by a state-certified abatement contractor under a state permit ($180–$420 for a house), after a 10-working-day notice.
- Demolition always needs a state demolition notice ($50 plus $5 for every 1,000 square feet demolished).
